Origin Outdoors Water Filter – Backwashable 0.1 Micron Hollow-Fibre Filter
Description
Origin Outdoors Water Filter – Backwashable 0.1 Micron Hollow-Fibre Filter
The Origin Outdoors Water Filter is an ultralight, compact and versatile hollow-fibre membrane filter designed for hiking, camping, travel, emergency preparedness and outdoor water treatment. With an approximate filtration capacity of up to 100,000 litres, it provides a long-lasting solution for filtering suitable freshwater sources without the use of chemical treatment agents.
The filter uses a medical-grade 0.1 micron ultrafiltration hollow-fibre membrane to remove more than 99.9999% of bacteria such as E. coli, as well as 99.9% of parasites and protozoa including Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium.
Its versatile double-threaded design allows water to be filtered directly from a source, from the included squeeze bags or from compatible PET bottles. A transparent inspection window makes it possible to visually check the filter, while the integrated monthly indicator can be used to mark when the filter was first put into service.

Versatile Water Filtration System
The Origin Outdoors Water Filter can be used in several configurations depending on the water source and available equipment:
- Direct drinking from a suitable freshwater source using the connected hose
- Filtering water from one of the included squeeze bags
- Connecting the filter to a compatible PET bottle with a 28 mm thread
- Transferring filtered water into a clean bottle or container
The inlet and outlet ends are clearly separated to support correct water flow and reduce the risk of cross-contamination between untreated and filtered water.
Hollow-Fibre Membrane Filtration
The filter contains a bundle of hollow fibres with microscopic pores measuring only 0.1 micron. Untreated water passes through the walls of these fibres, while larger biological contaminants are retained on the outside of the membrane.
The filtration process works mechanically and does not require tablets or other chemical treatment agents. However, it is intended primarily for removing bacteria, parasites, protozoa and particles from suitable freshwater sources and does not remove every possible dissolved contaminant.
Backwashing and Maintenance
The filter can be cleaned by reversing the normal direction of water flow. Backwashing helps remove accumulated deposits from the hollow-fibre membrane and can restore flow if the filter begins to slow down.
- Use only clean water for backwashing.
- Backwash the filter when flow performance decreases.
- The manufacturer recommends cleaning after approximately every 10 litres of filtered water to reduce deposits and help extend filter life.
- Sterilise the filter before and after extended storage.
- Allow the filter to dry thoroughly before long-term storage.
Recommended Use
- Hiking and trekking
- Camping and bushcraft
- Backpacking
- Travel
- Expeditions and remote work
- Emergency preparedness
- Vehicle survival kits
- Day trips and outdoor activities

Important Limitations
This filter is intended for treating the clearest available freshwater. It does not make every water source safe and does not remove all dissolved chemicals, salts, radioactive substances or viruses.
- Do not use for seawater.
- Do not use with chemically contaminated water.
- Do not use with water contaminated by oil or fuel.
- Avoid water near industrial facilities, intensive agricultural areas or mining operations.
- The membrane does not reliably filter dissolved chemicals or particles smaller than 0.1 micron.
- Improper use or damaged filter fibres may increase the risk of biological contamination.
- Always select the cleanest and clearest available freshwater source.
- Boil or disinfect water separately when viral contamination may be present.
Use and Safety Information
- Read and retain the complete instructions before use.
- Check the filter, hoses, bags and connectors for damage before every use.
- Keep the untreated-water components separate from the clean-water outlet to avoid cross-contamination.
- Do not drop the filter, as impact may damage the internal hollow fibres.
- Protect a wet filter from freezing. Frozen water inside the membrane may permanently damage the fibres.
- The recommended operating temperature is approximately 0°C to 40°C.
- Do not use detergents, alcohol or disinfectants unless specifically instructed for storage sterilisation.
- Children should use the filter only under adult supervision.
Storage and Sterilisation
For extended storage, the manufacturer recommends sterilising the filter with clean water and household bleach according to the instructions supplied with the product. After sterilisation, rinse the filter with clean water and allow it to dry completely before closing the protective caps and storing it in a cool, dry place.
After long-term storage, rinse or sterilise the filter again before returning it to service. Sterilisation may also be necessary if the filtered water develops an unpleasant taste or odour.
FAQ
How much water can the filter process?
The manufacturer states an approximate capacity of up to 100,000 litres. Actual service life depends on source-water quality, sediment, cleaning frequency and correct storage.
Which microorganisms does it remove?
The 0.1 micron hollow-fibre membrane removes more than 99.9999% of bacteria such as E. coli and 99.9% of parasites and protozoa, including Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium.
Can the filter be cleaned?
Yes. It is backwashable. Clean water is passed through the filter in the opposite direction to remove accumulated deposits from the membrane.
How often should it be backwashed?
Backwash it whenever the flow rate decreases. The manufacturer also recommends cleaning after approximately every 10 litres of filtered water to reduce deposits and extend service life.
Can it be connected to a PET bottle?
Yes. The filter has 28 mm threaded connectors and can be used with compatible squeeze bags or PET bottles.
Does the filter remove viruses?
The 0.1 micron membrane is intended primarily for bacteria, parasites and protozoa. It should not be relied upon to remove viruses or dissolved chemical contaminants.
Can the filter freeze?
A dry, unused filter can tolerate normal cold storage, but once the membrane is wet it must be protected from freezing. Ice may damage the hollow fibres and make the filter unsafe to use.
