Cold Steel Trench Hawk axe
Description
Cold Steel Trench Hawk® with Black Handle 90PTH / 90PTHZ
The Cold Steel Trench Hawk® is a robust tomahawk-style impact and cutting tool featuring a sharpened primary edge and a wedge-shaped rear spike. Its drop-forged 1055 high-carbon steel head, shock-resistant polypropylene handle and articulated Secure-Ex® sheath create a durable package intended for lawful outdoor, training, collection and specialised utility applications.
The steel head is differentially hardened to balance edge performance with durability under repeated use. The synthetic handle is designed to resist moisture and impact better than many traditional wooden handles and can be replaced separately if it eventually becomes damaged or worn.
With an overall length of approximately 48.3 cm and a weight of approximately 822 g, the Trench Hawk® is a substantial tool that requires careful handling, secure storage and responsible use.

Drop-Forged 1055 High-Carbon Steel Head
The Trench Hawk® head is drop-forged from 1055 high-carbon steel. This steel is commonly selected for demanding impact tools because it offers a useful balance of toughness, strength and sharpenability.
Differential hardening allows different areas of the head to be treated for different mechanical properties. The cutting edge can retain useful hardness while the remainder of the head maintains the toughness required to withstand repeated impact.
As 1055 is a high-carbon steel rather than stainless steel, it requires regular cleaning, drying and corrosion protection.
Primary Edge and Rear Spike
The head combines an approximately 8.9 cm primary cutting edge with a wedge-style rear spike. Both ends are capable of causing serious injury or damage and must be handled with the same level of care as any other sharp-edged or pointed tool.
The product must never be used against people or animals. Use only for lawful, controlled and appropriate activities in a suitable environment.
Shock-Resistant Polypropylene Handle
The black polypropylene handle is resistant to moisture and designed to absorb repeated shock without the swelling, drying or splitting commonly associated with wooden handles.
No handle is indestructible. Repeated impact, incorrect striking, throwing, exposure to extreme temperatures or contact with hard surfaces can eventually weaken or break the handle. Inspect it carefully before every use.
A replacement black handle is available separately under product number CST-H90PTH.
Secure-Ex® Sheath Included
The Trench Hawk® is supplied with a patented articulated Secure-Ex® sheath that covers the sharpened edge and rear spike during transport and storage.
Always ensure that the sheath is fitted correctly and securely before handling, carrying or storing the product. The sheath reduces accidental contact risk but does not replace careful handling.
Recommended Use
- Lawful outdoor utility tasks
- Controlled chopping of suitable materials
- Collection and display
- Supervised training
- Emergency equipment kits where legally permitted
- Specialised occupational use by trained users
Do not use the Trench Hawk® for prying, striking stone or metal, driving hardened fasteners, uncontrolled throwing or any task for which it was not designed.

Why Choose the Cold Steel Trench Hawk®?
The Trench Hawk® combines a forged high-carbon steel head with a low-maintenance synthetic handle and a protective sheath. Its replaceable-handle design can extend the useful life of the product if the original handle becomes worn or damaged.
It is best suited to experienced users who understand the risks associated with sharp-edged and pointed impact tools and who are able to use, transport and store it safely.
Care and Maintenance
- Clean the steel head after every use.
- Remove dirt, moisture, sap and other residues promptly.
- Dry the product completely before fitting the sheath.
- Apply a thin layer of suitable protective oil to the steel during storage.
- Use food-safe oil if the tool may contact food-related materials.
- Inspect the cutting edge and spike for chips, cracks or deformation.
- Inspect the handle for cracks, deep cuts, looseness or impact damage.
- Check that the head remains securely attached to the handle.
- Do not use the product if any component is damaged or loose.
- Sharpen carefully while preserving the original edge geometry.
- Avoid overheating the steel during powered sharpening.
- Store the product dry, sheathed and securely locked away.
