The Cold Steel Bokken is a full-length polypropylene training sword inspired by the proportions and flowing lines of a traditional Japanese katana. This improved 2015 version features a detailed imitation cord-wrap grip designed to provide better control during structured martial arts practice.

Manufactured from heavy-grade polypropylene, the Cold Steel Bokken offers a weather-resistant and low-maintenance alternative to traditional wooden training swords. It does not absorb moisture, rot or splinter like damaged wood, making it suitable for regular indoor and outdoor training.

The trainer measures approximately 105.4 cm overall, with an approximately 76.2 cm blade-shaped section and a hilt length of approximately 29.2 cm. Improved 2015 Grip Design

This version of the Cold Steel Bokken features an improved imitation cord-wrap pattern moulded directly into the hilt. The raised texture is designed to provide a secure gripping surface without the maintenance requirements of a traditional fabric-wrapped handle.

The detailed grip pattern can improve control when wearing training gloves, although users must still maintain a secure two-handed grip and inspect the handle regularly for wear or damage.

Heavy-Grade Polypropylene Construction

The trainer is moulded from durable polypropylene selected for rigidity, impact resistance and resistance to changing environmental conditions.

Unlike natural wood, polypropylene does not absorb water and is not susceptible to rot. It also avoids the risk of wooden fibres splintering after repeated impact or prolonged exposure to moisture.

The material is slightly more flexible than many hardwood bokken, but it remains firm and capable of transmitting substantial impact force. Controlled technique, sufficient training space and suitable protective equipment are therefore essential.

Full-Length Katana-Style Format

The Cold Steel Bokken reproduces the general dimensions of a full-length Japanese sword trainer. Its approximately 76.2 cm blade-shaped section provides substantially more reach than the O Tanto and Wakizashi Bokken models.

The approximately 29.2 cm hilt provides ample room for a conventional two-handed grip, making the trainer suitable for practising stance, grip transitions, cutting-line simulations, footwork and structured katana-style forms.

Blunt Training Profile

The blade-shaped section is approximately 25 mm thick and has no sharpened steel edge. Its broad synthetic profile is designed to approximate the visual form and general handling characteristics of a Japanese-style sword without the cutting risk associated with a live blade.

Blunt does not mean harmless. The rigid tip, edge area, guard region and hilt can still cause serious injury during uncontrolled contact.
