Silva 5-6400/360 Professional Baseplate Compass
Description
Silva 5-6400/360 Professional Baseplate Compass
The Silva 5-6400/360 is a full-size baseplate compass for experienced navigators and professionals. Its dual 6400-mil and 360-degree graduation supports different navigation systems, while the integrated clinometer, declination adjustment and map scales make it suitable for demanding fieldwork.
A liquid-filled capsule, sapphire bearing and hardened-steel pivot provide stable needle movement. The transparent baseplate is complemented by a magnifying lens, rubber grip and friction feet for precise map handling.
Key Features
- 6400-mil and 360-degree graduation
- SILVA 1-2-3 baseplate navigation system
- Liquid-filled compass capsule
- Sapphire jewel bearing and hardened-steel pivot
- Permanent magnetic declination adjustment
- Clinometer for measuring slope angles
- Magnifying lens for detailed map reading
- Luminous markings for low-light navigation
- Rubber grip and silicone friction feet
- Waterproof construction
Map and Distance Measurement
The baseplate includes millimetre and inch rulers together with 1:25,000, 1:40,000 and 1:50,000 Romer scales. The detachable safety-release lanyard has flexible 1:25 and 1:50 scales, allowing it to follow curved routes when estimating distances on compatible maps.
Slope and Declination Tools
The clinometer measures the angle of a slope, while the included slope card assists with terrain assessment and route planning. A built-in adjuster allows the compass to be permanently corrected for local magnetic declination.
Low-Light Navigation
Luminous markings improve readability after dark. They must first be charged with daylight or a flashlight and can remain visible for up to four hours without batteries.

Care and Safety
- Confirm that the compass version is balanced for the intended geographical region.
- Take bearings away from magnets, vehicles, weapons, electronics and large steel objects.
- Check local magnetic declination before beginning navigation.
- Use the slope card only as an assessment aid; it cannot determine whether a slope is safe from avalanches.
- Carry a map and an independent backup navigation method in remote terrain.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do 6400 and 360 refer to?
The compass provides a full-circle scale in both 6400 mils and 360 degrees, allowing bearings to be handled in either system.
Can magnetic declination be adjusted?
Yes. It has an integrated permanent adjustment for compensating for local magnetic declination.
What is the clinometer used for?
It measures slope angles for terrain assessment, route planning and identifying slopes that may require additional caution.
Do the luminous markings require batteries?
No. They absorb light from daylight or a flashlight and can remain visible for up to four hours after charging.
Is this the global version?
No. The standard 37585 model and the separately available Global version have different article numbers. Check the magnetic-zone version before ordering.
