What is the difference between 440A, 440B and 440C?
The 440 steel family includes several different steel grades. 440A generally contains less carbon, making it easier to process, easier to sharpen and highly resistant to corrosion, although it usually retains its edge for a shorter period. In terms of properties, 440B sits between 440A and 440C, while 440C provides greater hardness and better wear resistance.
The description “440 stainless” does not identify the exact steel grade. What is the modern “sweet spot” in knife steels?
There is no single steel that is universally the best. If you need a tough, stainless knife that is easy to sharpen in the field, 14C28N is an excellent modern choice. It offers a fine cutting edge, good toughness and high corrosion resistance.
If longer edge retention is more important, VG-10, AUS-10, N690, 154CM or properly heat-treated 440C are worth considering. Powder metallurgy steels, such as Elmax and various CPM-series steels, can provide higher performance, but they usually increase the price of the knife and may require more suitable sharpening equipment.
How do you choose the right knife?
Before purchasing a knife, consider how it will be used:
- For everyday tasks, choose an easy-to-maintain stainless steel that is simple to sharpen.
- For hunting and hiking, look for a balance of toughness, edge retention and corrosion resistance.
- For fishing or working in wet environments, prioritise steel with high corrosion resistance.
- For prolonged cutting, steel with greater wear resistance will be useful, although it may be more difficult to sharpen.
- For demanding woodland tasks, blade toughness and geometry are important, not only the ability to retain a sharp edge for a long time.
Even stainless steel is not completely protected from corrosion. The knife should be cleaned and dried after use, especially following contact with salt water, food, blood or other substances that may encourage corrosion.
