Its deeply curved profile, broad cutting belly and tapered handle combine the visual character of historical blades with proportions developed for controlled target-throwing practice.

Manufactured from 1050 high-carbon steel, the LaFontaine Thrower has a sharpened primary edge, acute point and unsharpened false edge. An integral finger guard helps reduce the risk of the hand sliding forward onto the cutting edge during controlled utility use.

Luke LaFontaine Design

The LaFontaine Thrower was designed by Luke LaFontaine, a longtime member of the Cold Steel team with experience in Japanese sword arts, Western swordsmanship, historical fencing, stunt work and screen choreography.

The design reflects an interest in historical weapon forms and cinematic adventure styling while remaining a functional modern throwing knife with a sharpened utility edge.

Curved Blade with Broad Cutting Belly

The blade has a pronounced curve and broad belly that provide a long cutting area for controlled utility tasks. Its acute point is visually emphasised by an unsharpened false edge along the upper portion of the blade.

The blade is approximately 20.3 cm long and approximately 5 mm thick, giving the knife a substantial and rigid construction.

The false edge is not described as sharpened, but the point and primary cutting edge remain capable of causing severe injury and must be treated accordingly.

1050 High-Carbon Steel

The LaFontaine Thrower is made from 1050 high-carbon steel, a tough medium-carbon steel commonly used for impact-oriented blades and tools.

This material provides a practical balance of toughness and sharpenability, but it is not stainless steel. The knife should therefore be cleaned, dried and protected with a suitable light oil after use, particularly following exposure to moisture, sap, dirt or acidic materials.

Integral Finger Guard

An integral finger guard is formed directly into the one-piece steel construction. It helps reduce the chance of the hand sliding forward towards the sharpened edge during controlled cutting tasks.

The guard does not eliminate the need for a secure grip, careful technique and appropriate working conditions.

Tapered Throwing Handle

The approximately 15.2 cm handle gradually tapers towards the rear. This shape is intended to reduce interference with release during controlled throwing practice.

As the handle is formed from the same steel body as the blade, users should inspect the entire knife before each session for bends, cracks, deformation or sharp damage.
